Serendib & Coconuts… A bit of history

Serendib is one of the most memorable ancient names of Sri Lanka. Coined by the Arabs and Persians, it is a transformation of a name the Indians used to use for the island, a version of Sidhaleepa, meaning “the dwelling place of lion's island”. The island was named Serendib for a long time, mainly in the West. Serendib also inspired the word “serendipity”, created by Horace Walpole in the 18th century. Serendipity means when something happens in an unexpected but positive and beneficial way.
Today Sri Lanka is the fourth-largest exporter of coconut products to the world. Among the most popular Sri Lankan coconut exports to the global market are desiccated coconut, virgin coconut oil and coconut water, while the country’s bristle fiber products manufactured through indigenous ‘Drum’ extraction method and activated carbon made with coconut shells are also in high demand. We now look to make ‘coconut shells’ just as popular as all the other coconut related products Sri Lanka has been exporting.
Our Story
Sri Lanka, once known as “Serendib” is home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world. These beaches are filled with thousands of coconut trees that add to the scenic beauty of the island. The coconut tree is special for Sri Lankans; From coconut roots, trunk, husk, water, leaves every part of the tree is utilized by locals in their everyday lives. We decided to spread the love Sri Lankans have for coconut shell related products with the rest of the world and created “Coco Serendib”.
The vision for building this company came from Rasitha, who is the founder of Coco Serendib. Rasitha has been in the hospitality industry and worked at some of the top resorts and hotels around the world for more than a decade. When the Covid 19 pandemic started, the hospitality industry was hit hard. Rasitha’s Life partner Nadeesha give him fully support to achieve his new venture. Rasitha decided to take a step back from his career and focus his energy on starting a new venture that was close to his heart and promoted a sustainable environment friendly mission. This was the start of Coco Serendib.

This drives our vision in wanting to see a world that embraces sustainable and environment friendly products so that many generations to come will still have the chance to fall in love with all that mother nature has gifted us.

Our mission is to introduce to the world a line of eco-friendly coconut products from Sri Lanka and motivate even more people to embrace the value of nature.
